If you run your vcenter in a VM, it's a bit tough to turn on FT when you shut down the VM. The real answer is to go into the options for that VM and change CPU/MMU Virtualization from automatic to Use Intel VT-x/AMD-V for instruction set virtualization and software for MMU virtualization. Either vmotion to another node, or power cycle the VM to enable that mode. After it's enabled you can turn on FT. Using this method enabled be to turn FT on 10 live VMs just by vmotioning them after changing the setting. Now all of the machines I care about are running FT on a 3 node cluster.
