Windows 8 and Server 2012 KMS Activation

An update is available for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS hosts to support Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012

This update extends the Key Management Service (KMS) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to allow enterprise licensing of Windows 8 and of Windows Server 2012.

KMS provides support for the following KMS client activations:

    Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
    Windows 8
    Windows Server 2012
    Windows 7 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
    Windows Vista and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Key Management Service (KMS) uses a KMS host key to activate KMS on a KMS host, and to establish a local activation service in your environment. This update extends support for KMS to provide activation for Windows 8 and for Windows Server 2012.

Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 (KB2706690)

Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2010 resolves issues that were found in Exchange Server 2010 since the software was released. This update rollup is highly recommended for all Exchange Server 2010 customers.

From my perspective I don't see the fixes for PreferredSite Unhandled or MapiExceptionUnexpectedMailboxState: Unable to delete mailbox or the local mailbox move Source and Target versions mismatch.

Minor quirks but it would be nice to see more testing!

FreeBSD Support on Windows Server Hyper-V

The FreeBSD drivers will allow FreeBSD to run as a first-class guest on the Windows Server Hyper-V hypervisor. The drivers will be fully released early this summer, including the source code for the drivers under the BSD license, and will initially work with FreeBSD 8.2 and 8.3 on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Deploying Windows 8 – Microsoft IT

Microsoft is currently ‘dogfooding’ Windows 8 with 30,000 employees;
Features deployed for business users are:

• Trusted boot helps protect the boot process and is designed to eliminate the possibility for malware to hijack the boot process or hide from antimalware software.
• Microsoft IT is performing a pilot on approximately 1,000 machines to evaluate changes in the way DirectAccess works, including validating virtual smart cards that use a machine’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip—a chip that supports BitLocker and, in Windows 8, protects the virtual smart card certificate’s private key.
• Measured boot enables the reporting of machine health in a secure way that is measured by hardware at boot time. Microsoft IT plans to use a remote health attestation like measured boot via a network-based
  custom system health agent to ensure security health of managed Windows 8 DirectAccess systems.
• Microsoft IT needed to make sure that Microsoft BitLocker worked on Windows 8. BitLocker drive encryption can protect data on mobile devices that include a TPM chip. Microsoft IT is also validating a new BitLocker feature called Network Key Protector Unlock that allows BitLocker to automatically unlock a drive when the machine is plugged into the corporate network.

Metro

When is Metro no longer called Metro; when its called Windows 8 Style UI.
Microsoft have seemingly decided to stop using the Metro terminology for reasons unknown but more information can be located here, here and here.

Windows 8 has reached RTM

• August 15th: IT professionals testing Windows 8 in organizations will be able to access the final version of Windows 8 through your TechNet subscriptions.
• August 16th: Customers with existing Microsoft Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download Windows 8 Enterprise edition through the Volume License Service Center (VLSC), allowing you to test, pilot and begin adopting Windows 8 Enterprise within your organization.
• August 16th: Microsoft Partner Network members will have access to Windows 8.
• August 20th: Microsoft Action Pack Providers (MAPS) receive access to Windows 8.
  September 1st: Volume License customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 8 through Microsoft Volume License Resellers.
